What is M Gallery?
M Gallery seeks to act as a professional venue for student artists, giving them the opportunity to install solo shows in a formal gallery space outside of the studio art department.
History
The M Gallery was established in 2008 and was disbanded in 2022 due to disruptions caused by COVID, which prevented a proper transition between upperclassmen and underclassmen leadership. In our initial conversations, Annalise Johnson and I made it a priority to engage with as many students as possible, with an emphasis on engaging underclassmen to ensure continuity. We were extremely successful in doing so and have gathered a group of students across class years and with a great diversity in areas of study. In this time, we leveraged our board’s personal connections with the Innovation Hub, Johnson Exhibition Gallery, the Museum of Art, and the Studio Art Department, among others. Over the course of the fall semester and J-Term, we met regularly and put on an exhibition and a zine launch party without official status as a student organization. This is a testament to the dedication of each of us and the power of compassionate, arts-centered community building.
Fall 2026 Exhibition
The Watchful Eye
The Watchful Eye draws on the tarot's archetypal logic to imagine a new card in the deck: a figure that invites reflection on sight, surveillance, and attention, offering personal, universal, or even prophetic insight into the oldest tension of human life: to see and to be seen. Emblems of the watchful eye are as old as belief itself, from the gods and guardians who watch over us, to the evil eye that wards off envy, to the clairvoyant's inner sight, all the way to the cameras and moral judgments of a surveilled world. The exhibition asks how sight, attention, and the unseen forces around us shape our understanding of what it means to see and be seen.
